Phyllostachys aurea bamboo - showing 'turtlenecks'

Description

Phyllostachys aurea is a running bamboo that has what I call 'turtlenecks'. These are the swollen areas immediately below the nodes. Seems to be characteristic of only P. aurea. Sometimes the internodes are shortened near the ground with the nodes going either straight across or sometimes at a slant. It is probably the most common bamboo in California.
